Q OBJECTIVES • Examine audiences and develop strategies for addressing them (CLO 2) • Construct accurate, effective presentations, visuals, and documents (CLO 3) • Effectively compose written ideas in standard, grammatically-correct, formal English, with no lapses in usage, mechanics, and spelling (CLO 4) ASSIGNMENT Part One: Cover Letter Using the guidelines from Chapter 9.2 (Links to an external site.), create a cover letter addressed to a particular individual at a particular institution or company that will accompany your résumé to the job search. Be sure that this is a job you can currently apply for; do not apply for your “dream” CEO position that may require experience, skills or education that you have not yet acquired. The cover letter must include the following: • Your own name, address, phone number, and email address (single space here; double space when done) • The name and address of the company to which you are applying (single space between parts of name and address, double space at end of company address) • Name of the person you are writing to (not to whom it may concern) • a paragraph in which you summarize your education and experience (retell your résumé in paragraph form. Use bold, strong action verbs) • a paragraph in which you make a case for yourself as an individual worthy of employment and capable of doing the duties of the job for which you are applying • a paragraph asking for an interview at a time most convenient to the person receiving the letter Like the résumé, the cover letter should be visually appealing: chosen fonts should direct and guide, rather than distract, the reader. Design and color should be professionally chosen. In addition, the cover letter should match the résumé in design, color, fonts, and letterhead/logos (if used). Part Two: Résumé Using the guidelines from Chapter 9.5 (Links to an external site.), create a digital copy of your résumé. Remember that your resume should include the following: • education, beginning with this institution, an estimated graduation date (or hours earned) • work experience (beginning with current job) • action verbs in the past tense to describe job duties o for example, implemented quality control measures o diagnosed customer needs Résumés should be visually appealing; chosen fonts should direct and guide, rather than distract, the reader. Design and color should be professionally chosen. In addition, the résumé should match the cover letter in design, color, fonts, and letterhead/logos (if used). Cover letter and résumé should be free of all errors in grammar and mechanics as well as spelling. This should be considered a bare minimum requirement. Remember that you are asking people to hire you - to give you employment at a company that they either own or hold personnel responsibility.
